History

Founded in 1966 by Adela Clara, Theatre Flamenco was the first American resident dance company to stage full Productions of Spanish dance in the United States, Thirty-five years old this year, the only dance company in San Francisco that is older than Theatre Flamenco is the San Francisco Ballet.

Throughout the years, Theatre Flamenco has welcomed many wonderful Bay Area performers to its stage, including Mónica, Juan de Valle, Nemisio Paredes, Virginia Iglesias, Cruz Luna, Isa Mura, Danielle Jenera, Rosa Aguilar, Ercilia Santos, Julia Moreno, and many, many more.

For the past twenty-five years, Theatre Flamenco has continued to develop new audiences through their program of performing for schools throughout the Bay Area.

Throughout the years and to today, Theatre Flamenco has continued to develop a varied repertoire drawing from classical Spanish, escuela bolera, regional folk, and flamenco traditions. Recognized as one of San Francisco’s outstanding ethnic performance companies, Theatre Flamenco’s history and
importance to the Bay Area is unparalleled and immeasurable.
