Official Trailer of “Con Nombre y Apellido”

We celebrate our 47th Anniversary with the presentation of “Con Nombre y Apellido, an exploration into the diverse national and cultural identities in both our city and the art of flamenco. Artistic Director Carola Zertuche will honor the famous families throughout flamenco history that have maintained a lineage and tradition for the art form – itself a mix of Spanish, Gypsy, Jewish, African, and Moorish influences. Using that tradition as a point of departure, Zertuche will reflect on the new crop of artists who are not of those families, nor of Spanish origin, yet have steeped themselves in that tradition and are pushing flamenco forward. Zertuche will integrate her Mexican roots with Spanish Gypsy, Asian and American artists who have earned renown in the art form – despite not having a “name.”

As dance critic Renee Renouf wrote of the Artistic Director after last year’s home season:
“One has to admire Zertuche for pushing the dance borders while remaining true to flamenco rhythms and style.”

Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco, considered by the San Francisco Bay Guardian having produced one of the best dance performances in 2010 is now creating a new passion-filled production that premieres this November. The esteemed company produces imaginative shows that utilize the talents of local and international artists, teach and mentor the younger generation, and maintain strong ties to the traditional dance communities of Spain.

This November, Theatre Flamenco celebrates four decades of artistic evolution and perseverance with the world premiere performance event “45 Años de Arte Flamenco” (45 Years of Flamenco), a tribute performance that reflects Theatre Flamenco’s creative progression and the evolutionary art of flamenco dance.  The transition in styles – whether it is music, dance, costume and instruments – represent the growth and maturity of the society that connects with this art.

Carola Zertuche, Theatre Flamenco’s Artistic Director, confronts the traditional anniversary retrospective from a wide angle. “45 Años de Arte Flamenco” (45 Years of Flamenco) is rooted in the soul of flamenco with an eye on the past, present and most importantly, future.Rather than present highlights from the company’s extensive repertoire, Zertuche will feature her world premiere productions, and pay tribute to the traditional dance performance of the founders through a series of original works inspired by Theatre Flamenco’s legacy.

Four dancers – Carola Zertuche (Artistic Director), Manuel Gutierrez, Juan Siddi, and Cristina Hall- will be joined by five musicians and two singers in a remarkable event that looks back at the roots of flamenco to the modern style we enjoy today.  Gypsy singers José Cortes and Kina Mendez will be accompanied by percussionist Sudhi Rajagopal, pianist Alex Conde; violinist Treggar Otton; cellist Jesse Wolff. For this concert, Theatre Flamenco is especially honored to present master guitarist José Luis Rodriguez, in performance with the company.

“Una Nota Flamenca” received outstanding responses and reviews from our audience in San Francisco. Here is what Renee Renouf of Ballet.co.UK had to say:

“Carola Zertuche’s entrance in a dusty brick red bota de cola wrapped in the mantilla used in flamenco performances by the late Teresita Osta, provided Una Nota para Sentir with an unusual partner in her swishing and grasping the train. In measured and deliberate style she would clasp it as if having a discussion, examining an idea or reacting with dislike. Tall for a flamenco artist although other tall women have distinguished themselves in this Iberian style, her approach was captivating and absorbing.” – Renee Renouf, Ballet.co.uk – (Click here to read entire review)

An experience of flamenco dance that embodies the emotion ignited from a single musical note, “Una Nota Flamenca” will captivate the senses. Traditionally orchestral instruments accompany the flamenco guitar, cajon and cante as dancers hearing the same musical note interpret the music through their own unique and alluring style of flamenco. Artistic Director, Carola Zertuche, and company will be joined onstage by renowned guest artists from Spain:  Manuel Gutierrez, Juan Siddi and Cristina Hall with musical direction by Jose Valle “Chuscales” and gypsy singer gypsy singer Cristo Cortes, and Felix de Lola along with musicians Alex Conde (piano), Tregar Otton (violin) and Jesse Wolff (cello). “Una Nota Flamenca” combines extraordinary footwork and invigorating music into a deeply moving theatrical experience.
