Program Description

For this special 60th Anniversary Celebration, De Ayer a Hoy / From Yesterday to Today honors the legacy of Adela Clara, founder of Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco, and Miguel Santos, the company’s former Artistic Director, whose vision, artistry, and dedication helped shape the company’s history since its founding in 1966 and contributed to a lasting flamenco tradition in the Bay Area.

This anniversary production celebrates six decades of artistic excellence, honoring Theatre Flamenco’s rich history while looking toward its continued evolution. Under my artistic direction for the past 20 years, I have had the honor of continuing the company’s legacy while creating new works, collaborating with generations of artists, and bringing flamenco into dialogue with contemporary artistic expressions. For this celebration, I am honored to bring together artists from different generations who have been part of Theatre Flamenco’s journey and who continue to contribute to its future.

For this special anniversary production, I am honored to collaborate with Cristina Hall, a flamenco artist from San Francisco who has lived in Seville for more than 20 years. Cristina and I have worked together since the early years of my tenure with Theatre Flamenco. She performs in this production and has created a new choreography of Caracolesespecially for this celebration.

I am also honored to collaborate with Andria Santana, a flamenco dancer from Málaga, Spain, who performs in this production and contributes as a choreographer. He has reimagined Miguel Santos’s 1989 Zapateado/Farruca, inspired by the original choreography he created for Theatre Flamenco. This work pays tribute to Miguel Santos, the company’s former Artistic Director, who continued dancing until the age of 95. In addition, Andria Santana and I have co-created a new duet especially for this anniversary production, honoring Adela Clara, the founder of Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco.

The production also features the collaboration of Nol Simonse, a contemporary dancer who has worked with Theatre Flamenco on numerous projects and serves as co-choreographer for one of the works. Nevares Encinias, a flamenco dancer and choreographer, also performs in the production and contributes to the creative process as a co-choreographer.

In addition, I have created a new choreography especially for this anniversary production and serve as its Artistic Director, bringing together a program that honors Theatre Flamenco’s 60-year legacy while celebrating its continued artistic evolution.

The evening features nine works, including three new choreographies and six reimagined pieces inspired by Theatre Flamenco’s rich artistic history.
